Dwele - Workin' On It
Dwele - Shady
Dwele - Love Ultra
New Dwele record Extension Sketches of a Man is out, and it's pretty good stuff overall - at least on par with Subject and Rize, maybe a bit too similar at times but Dwele's never been the most versatile cat around has he? His lazy, under produced style and signature vocal phrasings are in full force for better or worse, though there's straight up hip hop and even songwriting that lean towards classic soul to mix things up and make the ballads stand out that much more. The upbeat tracks on here are solid but to me Dwele shines brightest when he indulges his more grimy and hypnotic tendencies like he does on Love Ultra.
There's some really nice short cuts on here - a 1:18 Donuts tribute track made me smile no doubt, and the languid and droopy 70s reminds me a bit of something Lewis Taylor might have penned back in the day. There's a few other reasons to check out the record, such as his take on Bobby Caldwell's Open Your Eyes and Body Rock, Dwele's stab at a club track based of a riff from Mind Condition's corny and irresistible Breakin' My Heart. Now a full on New Jack Swing record from Dwele, that's something I could really get hyped for.
