The Good, The Bad and The Queen - History Song
The Good, The Bad and The Queen - Herculean
That's Damon Albarn's latest project, a one-off band featuring bassist Paul Simenon (The Clash), guitarist Simon Tong (The Verve), percussionist Tony Allen (Africa 70) and producer Danger Mouse. It's a dreamy downer of an album, dubby melodies and sad lyrics about war abound - not great for parties but a thoroughly comforting listen. The whole thing seems a little aimless though I'm quite fond of it, especially after letting the songs sink in. Just don't go in expecting a Feel Good Inc. or Clint Eastwood-type hit.
History Song is quintessential Damon Albarn blues built around a rainy day acoustic guitar riff, some lovely background sounds eventually creep in and flesh things out. The low key single Herculean shimmers, it's euphoric pop that's part Blur and part Boards of Canada. The Good, The Bad and The Queen is on the Parlophone label and should be out in stores today.
