Kyoto Jazz Massive - Eclipse
Sleep Walker - Eclipse

Kyoto Jazz Massive's steady output of 7" singles, compilations, full lengths and side projects over the past few years has been impressive indeed. The brothers Shuya and Yoshihiro Okino have built up quite an empire (or as they prefer to label it a collection) of talent during their 10+ years as the darlings of Japan's Nu Jazz scene, and deservedly so. Take a listen to Eclipse, their breakthrough track and the centerpiece of 2002's Spirit Of The Sun LP. It's a swirling and pulsing anthem full of keyboard and percussive goodness that deserves to be remembered outside of DJ circles and Gilles Peterson playlists.

Enter Sleep Walker, Hajime Yoshizawa's quartet of musical badasses and currently my favorite modern Jazz combo out there. They released their cover of Eclipse on the 10th Anniversary compilation for KJM and it resurfaced on Works (2007), Sleep Walker's most recent collection of rarities, remixes what have yous. It's not nearly the best thing they've put down but it's an excellent track regardless, giving the composition an organic and urgent feel the original lacks. Hajime's killer piano solo starting at the 5:07 mark is the real difference maker here, I can listen to that guy play forever. Sleep Walker and KJM, two great tastes that taste great together.
